Dead Triton V10
Tom, thanks for the pdf of the engine change procedure. I looked in my Haynes manual and didn't find a procedure. I was going to wing it. I have done many engine removals (worked at a wrecking yard) and one other engine change in my life.
My situation is I have a 1999 extended cab 4wd, V10, DRW truck. I bought it in July and have found that it is burning about 1 quart every 200 miles. I have already changed the PCV valve and hose and the oil cooler with no noticeable change to the consumption of oil. I have decided that an engine change is in order and am only waiting for my work situation to change in a couple of months keeping me at home more, and have been saving up for an engine. I have decided to go with a rebuilt from NAPA. Not sure who the builder is, I haven't gotten that far.
1. I have a 4" lift on the truck. I'm thinking I will need to take the hood and radiator support off to get the engine out with a conventional cherry picker. Will that work, or am I likely to have to modify the cherry picker to get more lift out of it?
2. Can the whole front clip be removed in one piece for easier access?
3. Can I remove the air conditioner compressor without disconnecting the lines and tie it up to the frame or fender, or should I get the system evacuated before parking the truck for the engine change?
4. Am I doing significant damage to the catalytic converter to continue driving it another 1-2K miles before I get ready to do the engine change. I have a work truck, so my personal truck only gets driven about 5oo miles a month with the work situation I have now. I'm planning on towing a trailer about 1000 miles round trip in July then parking the truck for the engine change.
5. I've been thinking about getting the catalytic converter back pressure checked before I park the truck. Good idea?
6. I would want to do any maintenance items that make good sense while I have the engine out, ex: engine mounts, radiator, water pump, exhaust manifolds, new exhaust studs, etc. What would be some other good items to change while I have the engine removed?
7. I'm thinking of doing a Banks exhaust during this process, but the $1800 price tag is a little rich for my budget. Are there any more budget friendly options that I should consider for a performance/mileage exhaust system?
Thanks guys!
Youtube channels typically suck as somebody with a 5.4 thinks they're all the same. But there's a good one on pulling the radiator support which makes it simpler to come out the front.
