Hi all,
I have purchased for little money a f350 4WD DRW 4 door truck. Body has 120k on it but motor is dead. I have founded a 38k mile engine for two grand. My problem is some people are telling me I must remove the cab to install it. Could this be true? It's a 2000 model very solid truck. Excuse my ignorance but until now most of my rides were suburbans of jaguars. Decided to go big.
There is NEVER an absolute requirement to remove the cab to service a Super Duty. There is a cab-on procedure for everything, to include the newest, most complex models.
Starting in 2008 Ford recommended cab removal for some complex procedures, particularly the diesel engines, because it was faster and easier for the tech. Techs have been doing this for years to save time, but it's not necessary.
You definitely do not need to pull the cab to swap the motor in that truck. Are you replacing it with with 3-valve version or at least a year with longer spark plug threads?
That was going to be the next thread. The engine I found is out of a wrecked RV 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. What would be your recommendation. I'm pressed for time on this one if I had someone do it what's an acceptable charge
Swapping a 3V engine would be an electrical nightmare because none of the electronics are compatible. Your truck, if automatic, has a 4R100 transmission, and the 3V engines have a 5R110 transmission. Ford never made a PCM that would control a 3V V10 in front of a 4R100.

Sir,
Setting aside all opinions - the motor you are buying needs to be of the same design as your truck for the electrical and fuel and transmission connections to function.
What year is your truck? As it is not clear from your post.

I'm sorry haven't figured out how to add a signature yet. The truck is bone stock 2000. As for the motor in there it's missing a serpentine belt and the mechanic that diagnosed it as bad is nowhere around. After Easter I intend to look deeper into the matter. I know nothing about these engines the engine I found was 38,000 miles out of an RV. Supposedly gas everything from flywheel to fan. When I sourced it I didn't know there were variants. I will call them back to get additional information. Like I said it's a 4x4 CC LWB DRW truck with 100 k on the clock
PI motors have PI stamped on the heads. Sorry I'm not more help as I've only had the original version and the 3V. Others will chime in or you can thread search here.
If your truck is all original, it will have a PI motor. The PI motor is 2000-2004 for the trucks with the 3v being introduced in 05 I believe. If both motors are 2v it will practically be a drop in. Might have to swap flexplates like I had to when I dropped a 01 into my 99 but not positive what's on an RV. As for the work, it's really not that hard; pretty much just have to remove the grill and stuff from the front and remove the intake manifold so you have enough room to lift and pull it out.
Thanks for the info. I'm sure the truck is original just have to find out about the other engine. It might workout better to rebuild the engine I have. Defiantly going to check the old to try to determine what has failed. Am I wrong but what I've seen on here 121000 is not a lot of miles for that engine?
