Info Please on the 2017 Integrated Brake Controller

I am looking for a 2017 Lariat, 502A, etc. A lot of trucks in my area were apparently ordered with the tow package, but not Max Tow. As far as I can tell, the main functional difference in those two packages is the integrated brake controller. I'm trying to figure out how much this matters to me.

I don't plan to tow often, but there are possibilities coming up and I know it would be nice to have if/when needed. How difficult would it be to add only the brake controller later, assuming the truck has the standard Lariat tow pkg?

I added it to mine. It was pretty easy. The hardest part was finding the connector behind the dashboard.

Oh, and the computer need to be "told" that it has the controller. You can pay a dealer $50-$150 to turn it on, or you can do it yourself with forscan (and an OBD2 adapter).

Great. If the connector is there and it's just a matter of buying the part and updating software, I'm in. That is what I was hoping to hear as it may make my search a bit easier.

Thank you.

You also get a lower gear ratio with the max tow.

You can buy the part on eBay from a dealer for around $100 and use Forscan to turn it on after buying the obdii connector (around $80). Then you'll have Forscan for all the other options it can do.

It is possible to get the IBC on the standard tow package, mine came that way. It is a $275 option. I think the hitch is different on the Max Tow package.

Yeah, I've seen the stand alone IBC option, too.

According to my brochure max tow gets you the IBC and an "upgraded rear bumper," along with 3.55 gears. Most of the trucks I've been seeing have 3.55s regardless of the tow package, so I forgot about that.

Sounds like a must-have, and cheap compared to something like VW/Audi uses. I've been away from Ford a while (at least from an active enthusiast standpoint) so trying to catch up on things like this.

I installed mine in my 2015. Had a private shop program the truck for it. I have a 16 ft car trailer with electric brakes, which is why I wanted it. However, if you don't know whether your trailer with have electric brakes, it may not be useful. All I have is the standard tow package when I bought my truck.

The other thing I think I would like are the larger tow mirrors. Haven't tried a truck yet with them, but I think it would be very useful.

You may want to be cautious. I ordered an OEM controller from a dealer on eBay. Although the part number was right, it was totally the wrong part. I was scheduled to get the oil changed and have it installed (and 'flashed') at my dealer and was fit to be tied! I called the selling dealer and it turned out the mistake was fortuitous, the controller is specific to my truck. So the 'right' part would have been the wrong part. The seller (Quirk) was very helpful and happened to find my dealer's other location had the right part in stock. For my 2016 with backup assist, the correct number (using VIN) was FL3Z-19H332-AB. The total cost of the install and part was $330.

FL3Z-19H332-AB is the module I used to install in my 2016 Lariat, no backup assist.
