I have door locks but no key. The locks are out and look perfect. Can a key be made? Any idea who or where? I'm in Las Vegas, Nevada. 52 Ford F2.
Thanks
It depends on the locksmith, I would call around... Some like the challenge of doing something that is out of the norm. Have you looked to see if you can still see the code that was ink stamped on the lock? If that's there then they would just need the decode book (this is the fastest way). If it's not there then they would have to either take it apart to find the pins and cut the key (Second fastest). The last would be to use multiple key blanks and file to cut a new key (this way can be expensive as it's normally based on T&M (Can take some time, depending on skill and luck).
I needed a skeleton key made for a cabinet that is over 100 years old. Only ONE locksmith in town would do it. I brought the lock in and they had it ready in a day for only $5!
If you are creative and very handy with a file you maybe able to figure out the pins. Take a blank key and blacken it with a match (wooden ones work best) -- be sure to hold it with a pliers or in a vice as it will get hot before you get it black with soot. Put it in the lock and wiggle it up and down and side to side. pull out slowly so as not to mess up soot (that's the hard part) see if the makrs in the soot show the pin marks and size - file it down and give it a try.
Before anyone thinks I must have boosted cars in my youth - that was NOT how I found out about this. A buddy had a 49 Harley he got from the Chicago Police - it had been an old side car bike with a suicide shift on the tank. They sold it to him for $100 but did not have the key for it. He had no idea if it was an original lock or something they added. It took 3 or 4 tries with blanks but he got it. Older locks were alot more forgiving than a modern day lock. One other thing you need good files and be ready for sore hands. I could not do it today with the shape my hands (for that matter my whole body) is in now. Good luck
