Help identifying C6(?) hoses & lines

New-to-me '56 Big Window w/351 Windsor with what I _believe_ to be a C6 transmission.

A couple of mysteries -

First, there's a hard line on the passengers side of the transmission that is just flopping around. One end goes (loosely) into the side of the trans body, just before the flange mounting it to the bell housing. The other end, toward the rear, is just chopped off and dangling. Any idea what this line is for and where it's supposed to go? I can grab the line and move it all over the place - it's basically flopping all over the place, held on only be being trapped under the Lokar shifter bracket.

Second, on the drivers side of the tranny there's what looks to be a round valve or actuator with a rubber, 1/4" ID vacuum line (coming from the intake manifold) running into it. The hose sort disappears into the body of the round unit, but there's no clamp on it. The hose can be pulled out from the unit very easily.

Anyone know what the round gadget is and whether there is supposed to be a clamp on it (I'm not sure how you'd get one on the hose as it disappears into the backside of the gadget at least 1/2" or so, hidden by a "collar")?

I've searched quite a bit and have looked at many C6 trans drawings, videos, and pictures, but I have yet to identify the purpose any of these lines. I'm also a bit confused as my tranny seems to have a square flange that bolts the trans body to the rear of the bell housing. Most C6's I've seen seem to have the bell housing integrated with the main body of the transmission, not bolted.

I believe that the engine is a post-'77 Windsor, and the assumption is that the motor + tranny came from the same donor. But who knows?

Anybody know what I'm looking at?

Thanks,

Bruce

Not a C6. Could be an FMX, or other MX "Cruise-0-Matic" trans.

C6 is all one piece case and bell.

Hard lines should be trans cooler.

"Thingy" on the side would be a vacuum modulator.

For all your "What is this thing" needs:

Ha! OK, that explains a few of the mysteries - NOT a C6 - it does look a lot more like the FM/FMX link you sent in the next reply. Time for some more research. Any opinion about the FM/FMX tranny? Is that a decently robust transmission, or should I expect problems?

On the lines, there are two cooling lines (out/back) going to the trans cooler up front. The (cut) hard line appears to be a 3rd line...but I'll get back into her in daylight and see if that's correct.

Thanks for the vacuum modulator identification. That's definitely it. Should there be a clamp on that bugger, or is a friction fit on the rubber vacuum line sufficient?

Thanks also for the charlietranny link - I'm off to do some more reading!

Looks to be an FMX based on the pix over at charlies - interesting, note the "cut off" line on the left side, just like mine. Guessing it's a breather of somesort?

Yes, that is the vent tube... it prevents the transmission from becoming pressurized and blowing seals when it heats up...
