I just picked up a warmed over 1966 352 with an auto trans behind it. The bell housing has a C6... serial number on it, so that tells me the bell housing at least is from 1966. With my web research, I THINK it is a medium case cruise-o-matic trans. The pan has 14 bolts and a small square bump on the passenger side. It has the strangest tail shaft on it though. It was pulled out of a truck, but it may not have been original to the truck. (BTW, it has a Lokar shifter on it.)
Looks like an MX or FMX. MX was the 60's unit, morphed into the FMX in the late 60's or early 70's. Tough sumbitch despite what you'll read about them.
Bellhousing can be swapped to bolt it behind a small block. I have an MX hangin in the shop that came out of a 64 Merc Monterey (390 car) snd a couple small block bells to fit it. We drove the merc around the back yard (no brakes) and would slam it into reverse or park to stop the car. Didn't faze the transmission. Drain the oil out and it'll still go.
Mine has 14 bolts, but the shape is none of those.
I will be using this in a short bed truck and there is no center carrier bearing. It is a simple driveshaft from tailshaft to rearend. ...I guess the tailshaft could be switched out??

You'll have to swap out the whole mainshaft for this. Where yoiu located ? That's probly an MX that's the predecesor to the FMX
That's what it is. I have a passenger car MX I've been trying to get rid of is why I asked. It has a slip yoke tail. You're probably better off using a different transmission like a C6. If you really wanted to be adventurous, you could swap out the mainshaft and tailhousing yourself. Like that shifter on it. I wonder if it would fit a C6 ?
