Has the internet distorted reality?

Do you guys think all the problems with the 5.0 and EB 3.5 get distorted a bit by the internet? Don't get me wrong, not picking on the internet as I use it to search things that interests me. I'm also not saying that they don't have their issues but I wonder sometimes if we read about all the bad issues and think these issues are more common than they really are. For instance, on this forum, how many 5.0 owners do we have and how many have actually had the serious issues that are discussed here almost daily. Same thing with the EB. Is all the trouble issues you read about all over the internet the same people on different sites ? It would be nice to know how many of these engines are on the road and running fine and have given years of trouble free use and how many have actually had the failures so that we could put it in perspective.

I think the answer is a resounding "yes"

One out of 10 happy people will share their experiences with friends.
But one unhappy person will tell 10 friends about theirs.

You need 10 raving customers to equal the damage done by one who feels wrong.

YES, I do....

As stated above, that 1 angry person creates big waves. I currently own a 2013 5.0 & was never concerned in the least. If I was a scared of what I read on the internet, I wouldn't have owned my 2006 F250 w/a 6.0 (lol) I had many trouble free years out of that truck, in fact my dad still has his 2005 6.0 which he treats horribly & in 12 years that truck has only needed 1 EGR Cooler many years ago & approx. 2 years ago a set of Injectors.

Short answer, don't let the internet scare u but shop informed

For sure the internet creates a distorted picture of everything. When I hear about ecoboost problems, and that's actually not even that common on this site, I always remind myself that ford has a million of these engines out there, so a few hundred issues is actually amazing reliability!

Vehicles are ten times more reliable than when I was young. Safer, faster and more efficient too. We are in a golden age in so many ways.

Look at some of the threads on here alone. You have one guy who originates a post complaining about the engine / service, etc and then you end up with 10 pages of replies piling on the BS that doesn't really matter.

The internet does not play fair. But, neither does consumer reports. For instance, if you're reading a CR mag and you're looking for reliability ratings on an F-150. CR may show that the truck is unreliable only because of one issue that may not even be mechanical. It could be something as simple as the SYNC not working correctly and the whole truck gets trashed by the people reporting on it.

Sorry Tim, it's a bit disingenuous to lump CR into this. They use surveys of a fairly wide sample size, and ask category-specific questions about reliability. Their charts indicate reliability of over a dozen different categories. A problematic infotainment isn't going to do a thing to the "Engine Major" category.

Surveying organizations like CR, JD Power, and others are the ONLY source of relatively unbiased data on reliability. Yeah, you could critique each organization's methodology, but it's nowhere near as inaccurate as anecdotal data collection by reading forums.

Sorry Tom, I didn't make myself clear then. It still affects overall reliability ratings. I understand how CR does their surveys, I've received a couple in my lifetime when I was a subscriber. I keep going back to the Ford SYNC because it's the worse dumbest thing that ford has done in a while. Some who's taking a survey will tank the survey if they're pissed off enough about the performance of a particular item.

That's certainly true.

I would argue that SYNC was pretty decent for the time when it first came out. Unfortunately the competition leapfrogged it quickly, and SYNC was left in the dust for years.

Yup, the SYNC in my truck has left plenty to be desired but I'd never tank the truck because of it. The truck as a whole has been remarkable.

However, the primary value that I see in the internet forums are the regional locations of it's membership. Different parts of the country get certain options that others don't get, other parts of the country may affect the way a vehicle operates which seems to be the case with the ecoboost and the 5.0L at higher elevations. I see value in every post except those that come here with an agenda of engine basking.
