My son drove has apparently been driving his 1990 E150 van even though it was running rough. He drove past me when leaving for work and I could hear it missing horribly. I told him that evening that he shouldn't drive it like that but he ignored me, and judging from the blown in half muffler it's backfiring.
I put a lot of work into it and he just abuses it. I'm letting him use my truck but that makes me nervous. I don't know where to start on his. It had all new tune up stuff, wires, plugs, distributor, etc. It still seemed to shift from first to second way early and then dog, but it didn't seem to bother him, so I turned him loose with it.
I have to figure out what to look at first.
*Fix the muffler?
*Why would it suddenly lose a couple cylinders?
*Why did I have kids?
*Will I still be able to work on it if I drink a few stiff ones?

1: Of course
2: Plug wire pop off? crossed wire? Bad coil?
3: Our weenies think for us sometimes
4: You may not be able to unless you have a few stiff ones first.
Thanks W's-350, I needed to vent. My wife is leaving on a trip Thursday and wants me to work on her car too. So she lends it to my son who doesn't get off work until 7:00. ????? And I have a full day of work tomorrow.
Anyway, I'm wondering if the muffler blew halfway open from a backfire, what happened to the two back to back cat converters in front of it?
I think I'm going to start with pulling the computer and see if it's fried capacitors, then I'm going to jerry-rig a muffler patch, then test each wire one at a time. Hell, all that should only take a couple of minutes, eh?
I'm trying to disconnect what I think is the computer under the heater core box. I pulled one cover screw in the front, it went thru a ground wire, but somewhere it's being held up in the rear. I wish I had the service manuals on this van too. (delgriffiths sold me the 2006 set).
