Alternator bracket interchange

I was able to figure out and correct my powersteering support bracket on my 86 460 this weekend, now on to the alternator side, I have the bracket that mounted the alt and 2 smog pumps at the top and am looking to ditch that huge bracket and swap with the smaller 2 piece adjuster bar and support bracket. What is the interchange on these and does anyone have a source for them? I know bronco graveyard has them for $90, but it does not specify what engine, only the amperage of the alternator. Also, this shouldn't matter as case dimension is the same, but I'm running a later model 120 amp alt. Would I be better off just cutting off my existing bracket above the alt mount? Thanks everyone!

You know if the one you have now works to line the belt(s) up then the less $$ is to cut the bracket to remove the pump part.

BTW guys have told me to do the same on my 4.9 as I don't have a pump and have these ears sticking up. May do just that when I get to installing the 3G ALT.

You'll want an early 429/460 alternator bracket. I have two on my shelf, not willing to give them up though as they're not common. Small block alternator brackets can probably be made to work if you make your own spacers and get appropriate length bolts.

I have these 429/460 automotive alternator brackets and they just won't work with the truck crank pulley and waterpump.

Ended up with the L&L bracket that JBG sells.

*IF* I can find the Torino brackets you are welcome to frustrate yourself for two days before throwing them across the garage into the scrap heap (like I did)
Just shoot me a PM.

If you have any fabrication skills, a hacksaw and some metal laying around, you can fabricate your own bracket pretty easy. The only thing you can't make is one of these, but the parts stores carry them in the chrome section.

Dave, (Fuzzy)
You can't just cut the A.I.R. pump bracket without losing all the triangulation.
Look for a thread by 'Inside Man' titled desmogging a 460 for pic's of how it fails.

Dave F,

He does have one of those.
The A.I.R. pump bracket only acts as the pivot of the alternator.
The adjuster arm is still there.

Not having a 460 or seeing a bracket and based on the OP saying "just cut the smog part off" I thought is was as easy as it is on the 4.9 ALT bracket.
Oh well

I've got the adjuster arm, I just really need the bracket that comes off the water pump and triangulates the bolt that's going into the block. The air pump bracket I know works, but just like the powersteering pump bracket, I didn't want to hack mine in case someone else needed it.

I read the thread on the deleting all the emissions stuff, not sure why dude zipped it off where he did, I was going to keep it where it triangulated at the water pump and mounted alternator and cut off the brackets ABOVE it. Like I said, I have no problem cutting mine, but I'd be more willing to trade for someone who needed it. These things aren't getting any easier to find.

TBH if you can cut that cast iron bracket you can cut a Y shaped piece of 1/4" stock that stabilizes the pivot bolt to the water pump.

Have a look at the JBG or L&L web pages to get an idea, but remember their bracket pivots in the middle of the head.
You need a solid vice and a BFH to get the offset.
The spacer can be a pipe nipple or something like that.

I thought about making one with bar stock, and I'm certainly not spending that kind of $$$ for the other brackets, I'll mount my existing one to make sure I can cut what I think I can, remove and hack it up. For the money these replacements and oem ones go for, I don't feel bad cutting mine up.

This is how I hacked it, a little more cleanup work and should be good. Am I correct on placement of bracket on water pump? It just seems like those 2 bolt holes lined up. I also know my adjuster bar uses the same mounting hole on the bottom?
