302 valve adjustment
I have a late '86 F150 with an efi 302. I am in the process of installing new lifters, and need to know what the proper way of adjusting the lifters are?
It appears that you just torque the stud to specified amount, but the book that I have gives a long detailed way of adjusting.
So what is the proper procedure?
Thanks, Edder

the only checking or adjust ment is if you have excessive rocker noise, caused by excessive wear,
just put everything back to gether tork the rocker stud nuts 20-25 ft/lbs, fire the motor, after a couple of minutes if have no rocker clatter or obvious tapping, then shut it down, clean it up, put the valve covers back on and forget it. if you do have excessive noise, determine which one it is, and you can use the proceadure in the haynes book, but the way to correst it is by installing a slightly longer push rod, other wise there is now adjustments to be made. hope this helps! Thanks for the reply, I assumed there was a torque spec for this engine. The book I have talks about adjusting the lifters almost like a small block chevy. That didn't make sense to me since there is a bolt through the rocker instead of a stud, which would seem there would be a torque spec. No torque specs were given, just a series of cranking certain cylinders to TDC and adjusting to a specific rocker to valve clearance with different push rod lengths.
I'll go with the torque specs after installing the new lifters and go from there.
Thanks for the help.

With the bolt down rocker arms, don't be shy about tightening them up. If you don't make them tight enough, they will back off on you.
