I know that I can buy the Altmans door latch kit, but they sure look a lot like any other door latch from any late model truck. Has anyone ever taken a door latch from something else, truck perhaps and used that instead. More labour but less money I am thinking.
There are a number of bear claw latches on the market...BUT...only the Altman from Trique Mfg will work with your stock door handle. If you are removing the handles anyway then this would not be an issue, but if you are keeping them then you may want to consider paying a bit more and saving yourself a lot of extra work.
Partially correct BJ...the latches cannot be locked in the "normal" way by reversing the direction of the interior door handle. However, the lock mechanism can be actuated from inside the vehicle by other means; including a flip latch or electrical solenoid. I believe that an enterprising truck owner could rig up a switch to the interior door handle that would control an electrical solenoid to lock the latch when the handle is operated as the OEM intended.
