I've been noticing that the door latch on my 2000 E-250 has been hanging lately. I some of the time I have to go in from the passenger side door to open the sliding door from the inside... About 50% of the time the door works.
I'm already replacing the rear door latch as the design has changed several times over the years and now is a better system (doesn't ALSO stop working from time to time). Maybe there's a revised door latch design for the sliding door too? Does anyone else here have the same problem? Maybe there's already a solution...
Not sure what rear door latch better design you speak of---they're pretty much unchanged since '92. The license place bracket/handle has been made cheaper in the later years, the very latest versions incorporating a port for future use of a back up camera.
At any rate chances are your side sliding door latch and strike initially need adjustment and/or lubricating. I'd start there first before digging in replacing parts *****-nilly. That's too expensive a way to fix things before determining they really need replacing. Nothing more disappointing than spending big money and time only to have no improvement.
My rear door latch is just horrible. I have to open it up and do some adjusting about every 2-3 months. The brackets eventually slide out of alignment and the latch stops working (usually at a inconvenient moment). I have tried any number of solutions including a stronger bolt holding it all together, lube, etc. I have already ordered a newer assembly and it mentioned that this design has been chanced significantly over the years. I'll post some pics when it arrives to compare.
...I'll also start with lube and general tightening of the sliding door too!
