All depends on the "check valves" directionality.

Here is what the 6.0 table book (bible) says about them in case anyone still wondered:
"Check valves incorporated in the inlet fitting for the high pressure oil rail, limit hydraulic disturbance/feed back from injector operation."

The Acoustic Wave Attenuation device as described as well:
"High Pressure Oil Rail with AWA Feature
• The high pressure oil rail has special AWA (Acoustic Wave Attenuation) features to dampen hydraulic noises.
• To accomplish this an AWA fitting is placed in the center of the high pressure oil rail and two specially designed end caps are used."

And the definition from the glossary:
"AWA Feature A feature built into the high pressure oil rails used to dampen noises that can be caused by the hydraulic system."

For reference, the AWA is built in and not serviceable. This is from a F-Super Duty 250-550 Workshop Manual:
"NOTE: Do not remove the oil rail end plugs or acoustic wave attenuator port fitting. Service parts are not available to support the components."

Hope this helps and clears things up a bit for anyone interested.

For the record, some people have removed the Acoustic Wave Attenuator and gotten the o-ring at a local hydraulic shop and resolved a leak issue. I sure wouldn't mess with it if you don't have to though!

Thanks for bringing that up Mark!

I would not mess with it unless I had to, but I would if needed.

I figured I would just pass on what I found. I simply mentioned it in another thread and the OP wanted to know all about it, which is fine, I just cannot recommend something I have not done such as that, especially when it's "not serviceable" in Ford's terms.

I know someone on another site replaced the oil rail because of the same symptoms I had and chocked it up to the AWA's being gunked from poor prior maintenance. I just wish I could find that thread since I have read so many.

In older trucks it was called a Flux Capacitor, these are the updated version of that...

My X has this intermittent weird idle sometimes when hot like you describe. Sometimes during one of these fits if I free rev the engine it will smooth out and sometimes not. My IPR value jumps up to around three 27 to 28 area when this happens also. Almost identical symptoms. I've been trying to mail this down for a while and when I read this post your symptoms sounded so familiar that i think i should replace these check valves. I've never had a CEL For this. Looks relatively easy and couldn't hurt. Agree? Just as simple as removing the valve covers correct?

What you mention about the free rev was also something that would happen for me. Sometimes it would clear, but most of the time not. What would help is simply shutting off the truck during rough idle and it would fire off and be normal again.

They're about $50-70 each depending on where you go and on shipping. It's up to you if that's a route you want to take. Like I mentioned, I found one thread that had identical symptoms and this solved their issues. They are really easy to replace and don't even require the rails to be removed.

Good luck.

I forgot to ask you... when your truck was acting up with a slightly high ipr value while driving say in stop and go traffic did you get a slight surge under slight throttle inputs?
I just want to mention to that my truck always starts easily. No long cranking or anything abnormal.

I cannot recall that occurring, but then again I hadn't been driving the truck much in traffic to notice that.
