This one looks promising from the photos. Might get a good price on it. No rust seen in pics. Gauges installed, so someone knew a little about the engine.
Once you find one, make SURE you have a good mechanic go over it really well to find the issues you can use to bargain with. Do not buy one without having it looked at by someone who knows these trucks. Period.

From the Carfax it has only been titled in low/no salt road conditions.
In addition to Mike's advice see if you can find a local dealer in Columbus that could run the OASIS report for you before going to see the vehicle.
Personally, I'd jump all over this before they price it...
This is the "promising one". They've had it a few weeks and may be willing to deal. The dealership photos are more comprehensive and show some rust underneath. Is this something to be concerned about? What about the 4.1 axle ratio? I thought 3.73 was the one to get on the 7.3 diesel. http://www.roadmasterautosalesonline.com/knoxville-tn/2000-ford-excursion-553646634.htm#photoGallery
That is not a lot of rust. More than we have/get down here in Texas, but not bad at all.
With 4.10 axles (if that is what it has), it will enable you to go to 315 size tires to get back to 3.73 effective ratio.
If the price is right, that could be a good deal. The green coolant needs to be looked into as much as possible. That is not ideal for these trucks, because people just don't check the SCA dropout while running it. BAD news for a diesel...see "cavitation".
Didn't all 7.3 Excursions either have 3.73 or 3.73LS axles?
In 2003 took me 3 months to find the 00 X. At that time my goal was to find a 4x4 limited 7.3 under $20K. 1 owner trade in at a Ford dealership. At that time they were all $25-30K. Took me 4 months to find the 02 X but wanted a limited ultimate no boundaries edition with middle bucket seats.
Hey Lifer, I get it, you want a 7.3, so I'll quit beating my V-10 drum, for now anyway.... (but still curious what your gearhead buddy finds laughable about them. )
I can keep my eyes peeled up this way for 7.3s that appear clean and rust free. We do use salt but there are some rust free cars roaming around still somehow, heck my '01 Vitara from WI is totally rust free! What is your general target budget and mileage cap? And is 4X4 required? Trim level matter?
I can also let you know of any 28'-30' Airstreams that come up too.
My buddy is high on the 7.3 and fairy ambivalent to the V10. It's the Army V10 work trucks that are having issues and the maintenance guys don't really like them. Of course work trucks typically get abused and have almost no highway miles. I'd just like to go the 7.3 direction if I can find that gem in my price range. If not in 6 months, I'll reevaluate.
Looking for Limited so I can get the heated seats and adjustable pedals. Requirements for my short, cold blooded wife (don't tell her I said that). Prefer 175k miles or less, and budget is $15k. Would bump either of those up if a particularly good example came along. I'd like white if possible due to the summer heat down here, but not critical. Also prefer stock if possible, but I do like the look of the 05 grill.
That Airstream is exactly what I'm looking for, and believe it or not that is an excellent price on an 11 year old version. Cheapest I've seen it was $32k. Too bad I don't have anything to tow it with yet... Does make these oldish Excursions seem inexpensive by comparison.
Use autotrader.com or cars.com.
2005 v10 4wd, limited, eddie bauer, xlt, or any.
sort by price, or distance from you.
Put a max price, etc very easy to search every few days until you find something worth you checking out, ask if somebody on FTE is nearby and can check it out.
I think I've searched every existing online car sales site. My favorite is Autotempest http://www.autotempest.com/. It basically checks eBay, cars.com, autotrader, and as many Craigslist listings as you can stand.
If those army work trucks are 05 and later 3 valve engines, I can see why he would have pause to buy one. The 2 valve engine is more than proven itself though. Oh and to stay on topic, good luck...I dont envy anyone hunting an Excursion in good shape these days.
