98 ranger xlt check engine light

The check engine light is on in my 98 ranger xlt. I had it scanned and received a code of OBDII or PO142(i'm not sure which one to reference. The teck said that it was the oxygen sensor, but I am not sure which one it is. Do I need to change all three? Also, My air bag light flashes while driving. Is thsi a big job, or can I fix it myself?

Thanks, Bob

Copied this from my service manual (from the CD version for all 1997 Ford Trucks). Don't really think it's different for the 1998. For the 1997 Ranger:

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0135, P0141, P0155 and P0161 indicate a short to ground, open, or short to VPWR in the HO2S heater circuit.

DTC/HO2S Reference List:

DTC P0135 = HO2S HTR-11

DTC P0141 = HO2S HTR-12

DTC P0155 = HO2S HTR-21

DTC P0161 = HO2S HTR-22

Possible causes:

-- Shorts to B+ in harness or HO2S.

-- Water in connectors.

-- Cut or pulled wires.

-- Disconnected wiring.

-- Open VPWR circuit.

-- Open GND circuit.

-- Low battery voltage.

-- Corrosion or poor mating terminals.

-- Damaged HO2S heater.

-- Damaged PCM.

l NOTE:
On some applications, a vehicle hoist is required to access the HO2S harness.

Visually inspect the HO2S circuit for exposed wiring, contamination, corrosion and proper assembly.

l Were any concerns found during the visual inspection?

Yes
SERVICE any concerns found in the visual inspection. COMPLETE PCM Reset to clear DTCs. RERUN «Quick Test».

No
GO to «H31».

Maybe the tech meant to say P0141, I found no reference to P0142. HO2S HTR-12 would mean heated oxygen sensor bank 1, after catalytic (I believe). If this is wrong, someone correct me. You didn't mention what engine you have. In the 2.3 L there is only one bank. Don't know what side of the engine bank 1 is on, driver's side or passenger side, in the V6. Someone else can help, I'm sure.

Hi Bob, welcome to FTE!

This may help you figure out which O2 sensor is which (George is on the right track): Ford HO2S Locations

Good luck!
