So i pulled my C6 from the 73 F100 to replace the pump seal, turns out pump seal wasn't leaking, its the O-ring around the pump and/or pump gasket, anyhow, i replaced the O-ring, & gasket, & cant find any tips online about installing the pump, I'm being pretty gentle with it and it dosnt want to slip right on in there just yet. What is the procedure for this? I cant help but feel sorry for all the folks who pull these things & change the seal & get it back in the truck only to find it still leaks out the pump oring
You might try getting a couple bolts that will screw into the case and cut the heads off so you can use them to index the pump and hold the gasket in place. If you have the in-put shaft in already the pump will slide in easier... long splines in first. Put a little Vaseline on the O-ring. The pump will take some working around to get everything lined up. Not too rough but not too gentle either. The pump is probably hanging up on the seal rings. Just take your time and at some point it'll slip right in and shock the heck out of you!!! Good luck with it.

Read this thread. If you pulled the pump out with the trans in the truck or horizontal.
I put the pump in 5 or 6 times before I got all the clutch packs seated so that the pump would go all the way in.
If it's stable and pointed straight up, it'll be way easier to get it all together. Just don't leave the band out like I did. Then you'll have to take it all apart again.
so it stopped raining finally and I got to work on it yesterday, I took a while with it & got everything aligned as good as i could, then when I went too put it in, it just slid right in there, or at least I think it did, I had the input shaft in, but if I torque the bolts down even just past finger tight, the input shaft will not slide in and out freely. and the pump seems to want to press in further, but It looks good too me, Im just hesitant to torque the bolts down any more right now. what is the ft lb rating anyway?
I'm by no means a transmission expert with only one functioning rebuild under my belt (the other rebuild shall not be mentioned...) but I have a couple of thoughts.
I'm thinking that either the pump isn't square to the bore, maybe because it isn't torqued yet or because something is stuck behind it or that your end play is too tight. That could be because something isn't nested into it's mate properly which is the problem I kept having due to putting it together horizontally.
You check end play by using a big screwdriver to force the reverse/high clutch drum toward the tail shaft and measuring the gap between the thrust washer and the pump. My stuff from Ken Collins says 0.008" to 0.044" is what you are looking for. If you have none or it's already on the close side without the pump being torqued, something isn't nested right.
thanks for the info, I'm noticing that with torquing it down just a couple ft lbs, it wants too seat back in there, (I dont want too force it by torquing it) but i feel like it is in the proper location, and torquing it in the right sequence too the right rating would square it out, I'm just hesitant too try it, because I'm all too familiar with the feeling of "oh its almost tight enough, just a tiny bit more.......
