I had a small leak from the front pump assembly of my transmission, took the front setup off got the new gasket and am now trying to get the front back on. I've been having trouble, and I can't tell if it's bumping into the stator support or just around the outer edges. Anyone have any tips on getting it on? Or should I just try keep trying to tap it in with a hammer?
Any help'd be great.
Thanks
Taylor
If you removed the pump while the transmission was in a vertical position the clutch packs will be out of whack and thrust washers fallen out of place.
Stand the transmission on end.
Remove and reassemble the clutch packs, then install the pump.
Stu, you statement about vertical position would be the same as standing on end, you ment pump removed while the tranny was in the horizontal position will cause thrusts to fall out. Don't ask, been there done that was so damn smart at 18 years old.
Yeah, me being completely ignorant to transmission work, we did take it all apart in the horizontal position, put it back together vertically, and still a few of the thrust washers are off, so that's why it won't seal down (that's what the guy at the trtanny shop told me). So, back apart again I guess...
One good thing to do when putting it back together (take this to heart) is "Glue" the washers inplace with some petroleum jelly (Vaseline). Dont be afraid to use it eather, it will melt away after the tranny warms up and dosent hurt the fluid any. Just make shure that you use enuff to hold it inplace when you turn it upside down. I just recently rebuilt my C-6 and this was my first time doing it. I was told by several people to use it, and I did for the most part. I dont think I used enuff on one part or may be didnt use any at all, and flattened the tabs on one of the washers. So I had to replace the washer, not an expencive thing but for me I paied more in gas tring to find them then I did on the darn washers themselves. Also check the seal rings around the stator suport, make shure they are closed. The ends will hook together, and if they are not closed that will stop you from getting it back in. There are going to be two I think I dont know about every tranny, but they are right next to eachother. I would not use a hammer to get the pump back in. if everything is in place then it will fall althe way into place. you may have to wiggle it a little to get it together but it will go by hand. One other thing I did to help with the pump is found two 3" bolts that would thread into the bolt holes that hold the pump inplace, and cut the heads off. this way I could put on in the top and one at the bottom, place the paper gasket in place and slide the pump down. Hope this helps and good luck.
