Hi,
I'm trying to pull the front pump off my tranny. I was able to budge it just a little with a couple of vise grips attached to bolts in the two threaded holes. But now it's not moving at all.
What am I missing? Do I need to be a certain gear?
caution! make sure the trans is standing up on it's tail with the pump facing up at you,or parts will fall out, that are not designed to go back in without being disassembled and reassembled inside the case!
they can go back in,but id never do it again.id strip 'em out and put it back together as intended during a rebuild/assembly or just take it to a trans shop and say these fell out, please put them back. haha.
did you remove the filter?
your supposed to use a slide hammer.
whats the pump coming out for?
well, here is a redneck method that works.but i can assure you he is wrong at the end when he says you don't have to worry about stuff falling out with the trans laying down like that.he just got lucky.i tell ya right now, stand it up on it's end first or you could be very, very, very, very sorry.
the first assembly is the coast clutch behind that pump, and the pump is all that holds it there! fair warning.
I want to replace the pump seal before I put the engine back in. I've already replaced the filter and the pan is back on. I had already watched this video and was using it as a refference.
So, parts will fall out?
Now what? Do I pull the tranny again and take it to a shop? I'd hate to have to do that, considering it's been out and is now back in.
And since I've manage to move the pump, I will assume it has to come out to replace the seal.
oh i see what your doing.typically that's not a seal that fails.the seal you will replace whenever the engine or trans is out with an auto, is the seal in the center (despite if its leaking or not.for cheap insurance) the torque converter seal.you leave the pump be for this one.you can remove it very carefully with screw drivers and tap the new (updated vition seal -ask for it at napa) back in with a large socket.
i strongly encourage you to leave the front pump alone.put those bolts right back and torque to 20 ft lb.you have no idea how lucky you could be right now that the pump didn't come out for you (due to the fact you replaced the filter already.)
give that trans filter a big sloppy oily kiss next time you change it haha.
