I have a 1958 Ford Thunderbird that i have absolutely no idea about and was wondering if someone can help me identify the engine and trans that was originaly installed from the factory. I believe it was a 352 FE motor. But the trans is a mystery to me. It's an automatic but i don't believe it's a C4 or C6 because of how age. I know this isn't a truck but i don't know where else to get the expertise. I don't trust some long haired punk rock stoner at autozone to identify it. All the smart guys that are presentable are in the back. Isn't that the way it goes? I love the car and hope to someday restore it. the previous owner repainted it in 1995 (but rust is starting to show through), also replaced the motor & trans to what i believe is a 390 FE and C6. Previous owner kept and gave me the original motor and trans. Car is just sitting in the barnyard next to my grandfathers 1978 Eldorado Barritz. eeewwwww GM

Aaron, does the case appear to be cast iron while the bellhousing and tailshaft housing are aluminum? If so its probably an FMX. Although it could have been called a Ford-O-Matic. I really dont know what the differentce is between the two transmissions. I was under the impression they were the same thing. They may or may not be.
not sure cause it's in the barn under a tarp surrounded by a ton of other engines and trans. can't really get to it but i think your right cast and alluminum housings. i remember seeing Ford-O-Matic somewhere on the car now that you say that. Thanks a bunch. i wouldn't have figured it out.
