Weird transmission?

so the transmission I found to stuff into the 77 (351m) seems to have a super long tail shaft. Can someone tell me if they think this will fit alright?

What did it come out of? Do you have the original? That's probably out of a car.

Please see: Automatic Transmission Identification Guide - FORDification.com
I suggest that you compare the trans oil pan to the C6 picture and measure the top two bolt hole spacing & compare to the picture. Hope this helps.

That looks a little long.
Three different extension housings (tailshafts) were offered: the Lincoln version at 17.4 inches long; the truck housing at 7 inches long; and, most commonly, the 14-inch length used in passenger-car applications.

I don’t have the original, it came out of an 83 F350 with a 460, but I think whoever had that truck pulled it from a Lincoln. The question is, will it fit without modification?

My trans seems as though it may be out of a car (14-inch length tail housing). I don't know who installed it.
Can you measure the total distance from engine to rear end and subtract your drive shaft length?

I think your drive shaft will be too long with that.

Yeah I was already planning on having to cut down the driveshaft because I got a 9” rearend and driveshaft from a long bed 77’ so that’s not a big deal.

I cant measure total length right now because the truck is an hour away! I’m gathering parts to swap them in at my buddies shop where it is now, then trailer it home.

side note, I need a tailgate for a 77’ too if anyone has one

so it looks like I have the Lincoln version then. Besides cutting down the driveshaft will that be an issue to install?

I would find out what it is before you do any cutting. If it came out of a Lincoln they had some one off parts that might be hard to locate if you need parts for it.

It's a C6, the casting number on the extension housing is: D1VP-7A040-AA = Ford part number: D1VY-7A039-A

Original applications: 1971/72 Galaxie/LTD/Marquis 429 Police Cruiser; 1971/72 Lincoln/Continental Mark III/IV 460; 1972 Thunderbird 460.

Other issues that might show up is the diameter and the end to end length of the universal joints. And there are many universal joints. I imagine that the drive shaft is an hour away.

So does anyone know of someone selling a tail shaft for a truck c6? I’m thinking of having it rebuilt when I get it anyway

From what I understand, the C-6 transmission has to be disassembled to remove the tail shaft.
