Getting ready to install a new harness on my frame off rebuild for a 1962 Flareside. Just about ready to put the cab back on and will start the rewire. I'm asking for any tips or tricks you might have when rewiring one of these. Any help is appreciated.
Engine installed after fabbing engine mounts for frame.
For authentic style reproduction harnesses many people are going with this company. They apparently do a fairly exacting version with correct connectors. I can not say myself as I have not used them yet, but they have a good reputation.
So, if you use an American Auto wire harness. How do they make the connections? Do you have to have an original and cut the connectors off and splice them to the harness?
I like Bill's saying. "You thought you bought a truck, but you really bought a hobby, and hobbies tend to be expensive."
I always nod when I hear that one.
It depends on what you want to do. These high-end reproduction harnesses might be better for a high-end restoration.
Many of the kits are at least somewhat universal and/or let you add extra circuits for electric seat warmers, backup cameras, etc. etc.. The idea is to remove all of the existing wiring, then use the connectors that come with the universal kit. Some of the fit and finish is left up to the installer in those cases.
One I have had experience with is M+H Fabricators. I and many others have used them for GM harnesses. They do nice work with original wire colors and connectors. But, they don't do Ford products.
Here is what I am using. Keep in mind I am not restoring the truck but making a more modern one in the areas of power and safety.

American auto wire has the connections to the truck parts, but they have their own connections for their harness connections. You'll need their crimping tool, and it cost a bit of money. i have it, and we can talk about you buying it from me for cheaper than they charge for it if you want, or there are a bunch of them on ebay.
hope this doesn't get me in trouble with the FTE powers that be. i'm NOT actively selling this tool, but it's just sitting in my toolbox and i'll never be used again, most likely.
