Recently when my 6.0 was worked on at a diesel shop, they topped off my Ford Gold coolant with Red ELC. I threw a fit, but they said the red was universal. Should I be worried about them mixing coolants?
Ohhhh...from what I have read around here you just opened the floodgates for various responses
Everything I have seen says NOT to mix coolants of any type unless you want gelling to occur in your coolant system, which will plug up the EGR and oil coolers.
I know for certain others that know 100% will chime in and I would hope they say the same unless I am waaaaay off.
Ford gold, a HOAT coolant, does not play nice with other coolant types. This includes "universal" coolants. You run a good chance of the coolant turning to sludge. Go back and demand they flush the system and either refill with fresh ford gold or ELC.
You will have more leverage if you show them a credible source showing that HOAT cannot be mixed with ANY non-hoat coolant.
if they did that your better off flushing it yourself and refilling with whichever type of coolant you want to use Id say go with elc like most here but its your truck and up to you they owe you the flush but their screw up is why they owe it too you do you really them "flushing" it out most places don't take the time to flush out the system real good to start with
Thank you all for the responses. I called the shop and discussed my concern with their goof. They offered to flush and refill for free. At this point I feel more comfortable flushing myself. Based on the level of service I have received so far and the fact that the shop said they bought a barrel of 50/50 Xerex, I foresee them draining once and refilling with the 50/50.
I will just do it right myself... and after all my research, I think I am converting to ELC.
