Coolant ?'s

I just bought an '01, F350, 7.3l ps diesel, 4x4, dully truck to carry my atv's and pull a travel trailer. The manual recommends adding a coolant additive, FW-15, I think, and a specific coolant w/ a long ford part #. Other than the Ford dealerships, where can I get these? Do I have to use the Ford specific coolant and additive? In other words, can I just go get some antifreeze at "wally world"?

2 types of coolant came in these trucks... There's the "regular" green coolant (same stuff you get at Wal-Mart, Prestone, ect...) and then there's Ford's "Gold" coolant. The green coolant requires the periodic usage of additives (the FW-15 you mentioned), and shorter change intervals. The gold coolant is extended life and does not require the use of additives. I don't know which year ford switched from the green to the gold coolant, however, if your truck has green coolant, you can completely flush the system clean and run the gold coolant, and forget about ever adding the additive again. If you decide to do this, only run ford's gold coolant, as it is the only extended life coolant with the proper additives for the Powerstroke. While you're at it, you may want to replace the stock upper radiator hose (that runs through the serpentine belt) with the one that runs around it. Somebody else here should have the ford part #.

Hope this helps you out....

I don't know about all of that green gold mess, but I believe I found out on this site that you can just properly flush the system and replace with the Global final charge pre-mix available at Wally and forget about test strips or additives for about 3 years plus. Isn't that right?

If you just bought the truck, swap out the coolant for known diesel coolant. Who knows what the previous owner was running. Then do the test strip and additive deal every oil change.

Any superduty can use the gold stuff. If you have the green stuff, you just have to make sure you get it ALL out. There is NO difference in the materials or design of the cooling system of the vehicles that came with green or gold.

Remember that the OBS F450 were labled as "superduty" when you say that.

Didn't read that.

Well I was doing a little research on coolant the past couple days as I am gonna flush and replace mine started looking at running the red ELC, and found where both Ford and international said to NOT under any circumstances run it in the T444E or powerstroke. The semi I drive has the red in it and thought about going that way until I was reading that, it seems some of the other parts other than the engine are not compatable with it, expecially if used in teh powerstroke, not sure what that means, but I am sure it means it won't be in my truck I will be switching to the gold when I do mine in the next couple of weeks.

Just wondering if you can point in the direction of where you read that? Which coolant in particular do they mean by the red? I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Texaco ELC (which is red) is what International uses for a factory fill.

On edit: the document that aklim linked to in post 13 of this thread is the document I was thinking of.
