Sorry that you couldn't figure out how NOT to read this post based on its obvious title, and the declaration that I did search and found nothing useful.
Just two words typed in the "search" function.....some of the first three pages out of 33. I guess the obvious titles of these threads are above your pay grade..........
So I have a question...."I live in WY and MI. Both get very cold. I switched to Rotella 15/40, but something I was wondering if I could do is mix a quart of 10w30 or 5/30 with the Rotella 15 40? That way I have a thin oil for cold start ups but also have the zink for protection.
. Would the 5/10w30 stay mixed with the 15/40 overnight or would it seperate so in the early morning it would flow first when cranking/starting?
Would it be on top of the 15/40 and therefore to high for the oil pump to push first?
Don't do it. It won't mix in a linear fashion and you are better off waiting until the next change.
If you are after good startup protection in the current oil then use molybdenum sulphide additive ('Moly lube'). It is the 'magnet' in Castrol's much hyped 'Magnatec' brand of oils.
I use VR1 in a (foreign) race engine that revs to 8000 rpm.
I've never had an oil related failure and on tear down the rings and bearings can be reused.
That's good enough for me, I recommend VR1 but I did just notice the local Autozone stopped carrying it.
Autozone did stop carrying it, about two weeks ago they put it on sale. $1 for 1 quart. I got three boxes so 18qts.
X2 on the jealous! Autozones around me never carried it. I thought I got a deal at Pep Boys a couple weeks back when they had it on clearance for 25% off (and I bought all they had). You win!
My local NAPA and O-Reilly both carry the Valvoline VR1, but the selection seems to vary. I've not seen it at AutoZone
I wouldn't try to "roll my own" looking to improve certain properties. Millions have gone into engineering these oils, and just throwing something in cuz it sounds good could have unforeseen effects
For very cold weather starts, just change to a lower numbered oil, as the chart above shows. 10W-30 flows well at pretty cold temps

Hey man, that's great information, I truly appreciate it. Maybe next time just help a fella out, and reference these links, rather than being dick about it. That being said if you really want to gamble on pay grades, I'm your Huckleberry.

Hahaha..Well, as one dick to another, I was referencing your statement of "obvious titles and searches."

Well, Ringo, I'll call yer bluff and raise you a grand. Just scroll down any page in this thread to the bottom and read (from '08) what Shamus queried. 22 pages of information relative to your question. Settin' there all this time, just waitin' to be read.
OK, guess I started this S*(t storm, LOL, that was pretty damn funny though, been waiting to pull that trigger for awhile.
We all enjoy helping cherries out, but we are also well known to push buttons once exposed. The question was a good one, but as show, has been discussed and contemplated many times. One other requirement for these forums is thick skin. Been working on these trucks for almost 40 years now, hence I'm retarded, I mean retired and old as are many others, and cantankerous. Wait till you meet ND
lighten up, have fun, and when your knuckles are callused over you can be cantankerous also.
Been trying to find out... still searching. It's one of those shows my sister watched like "A Family Affair" (Yuck! so sappy!). EDIT.. No luck on my end. A fossil is gonna have to chime in... someone who was more than a gleam in their dad's eye during that era. ND!!!!
Horne served in WWII and earned two bronze stars in combat. Here's a pic when he wasn't all pissed off, super famous in commercials &c. back in the 1950s
