Lock issues
Well my Focus ST has a issue where when I am driving, and if hit a bump just right the hatch pops open. Then rattles till I reclose it. I have had it at the dealer twice. Once for a new latch mechanism, and the other for a BCM reprogramming. Or Body Control Module.
The problem started last November, and was first looked at in December.
I have gone as far as not having my key fob in my pocket when I drive, and making sure I can not hit the dash button. Which for me is a physical impossibility at my height. As for the key fob I have put it face up as so the buttons can not get pressed, and keeping it separate of stuff.
After the repairs it works fine for a couple weeks. Then once it pops the first time it starts to become more frequent. Sometimes little bumps will pop it where big bumps will not. I have tried several times to recreate the popping, but it won't work that way. Also it has happened all but once at freeway speeds.
Compounding the issue to some extent I drive it about 600 miles a month, and 75% being a hour or so trips. With almost exclusively weekend drive time. I have a company supplied work van, and a free gas card.
I have checked online, and Ford has a recall for the BCM. The jist of it is that if you hit the trunk release button once "the one in the car" the hatch will pop open. Also a few other owners have reported their hatches will not open when the button is pressed. I have a feeling one was lemoned after a failed hatch replacement. So my problem is the inverse of their issues, but I believe it stems from a common problem area. What I do not know.
I bought the car because I just kind of needed/wanted something fun that I did not have to worry about for quite awhile. All but 1 of my cars I have always driven old cars/trucks, and being dependant on my skills + time to keep them on the road. My new job or career is a bit demanding of my time so I thought why not. So it bugs me alot when I have to deal with rattling from my hatch for as little as I get to drive it.
So do any of you guys work for a Ford dealership, and may have seen this issue? If so what area was it in so I can pass it along. My service writer is stumped, and not sure where to go next time when I drop it off again.
Disconnect the switch on the dash or at the latch by unplugging it. If it stops, there's a short circuit somewhere.
