Column shifter pin assembly help

To give a little background, my 3 speed on the column shifter, rubber bushing, and shift column bowl were worn out (badly) so I ordered all new NOS parts with the assistance of Number Dummy. Per the Ford parts diagram, I ordered the two "trunnions" as well as the spring that are shown. My shift column came with a roll pin as well as another fatter pin, all shown in the attached photo. I cannot figure out what the correct setup is supposed to be.
First, there is no type of shifter pin shown in the factory drawing. It only shows the two trunnions and spring going inside the shifter hole. If one assembles it this way, the trunnions and spring simply fall out the shift bowl hole at the bottom. What am I missing?

Correct me if I am wrong , in the exploded diagram the shift collar for the 3 speed is part number 7228 and the shift collar for the automatic is part number 7228. Are they both the same part?

They are different parts. The "7228" is a partial part number and used only to reference the diagram. For instance, the manual shift tube I have is part # D5TZ-7228-B, while the auto part # is D5TZ-7228-A.

Looks like either (A) you have the incorrect shift bowl (the hole where the trunnions go is too large) or (B) you need to use the large pin (shown beside the roll pin in your photo) instead of the trunnions and spring. Hopefully Number Dummy will chime in and clarify.

These have been my thoughts too. I'm pretty confident the part number is correct, and the box the shift bowl came in says "with attaching parts" so who knows. Maybe Ford updated to the pin over the spring and trunnions design since these parts diagrams were printed?

Well I went ahead and used just the large pin and it seems to hold everything together fine and the shifter feels nice and tight now. I can only guess there was some sort of engineering change where the trunnions and spring got replaced by the pin.
I'd be curious if anyone has found the trunnions and spring during disassembly on their particular truck. My 76 had only a pin going through it when I disassembled it, but it looked like it had been taken apart a time or two.
