The pin that holds the column shifter in my 1986 F150 with automatic trans has lowered in the shift lever to the point where it barely engages in the top side of the shift collar. I can't seem to move it back upwards. How would I do this without breaking something. Can the pin be replaced or is it press fit in the lever? Need help fast!
If I remember correctly it's just a roll pin or a spring pin. In other words as you drive it in, it shrinks and that's what holds it in place.
I think your problem may be the spring that pushes against the lever. It may be pushing the lever off enough to were the hole is not lining up and it's resisting your efforts to push it back in place.
If you have a assortment of punches or pins, you could find one close to the hole size and stick it in the top. Use that to help line the lever back up as you try to drive it from the bottom. If you end up pulling the pin out of the bottom, make sure you do have something very close to the same size going in the hole from the top at the same time, to try and keep everything in place.
There are rare occasions when the pin splits in half and it won't stay in the hole then.
