Help please: problem with column shift rattle
2001 navigator: column shifter rattles when driving. The pin that holds it tight to the column is rattling out. I can push it back up to hold the shifter lever in, but the pin or the holes must be worn. Ever heard of this happening? I don't know if I can replace it with a nail or not. The head of the nail would keep it from sliding down and out of the hole. I talked to the parts guy at the lincoln dealership and he suggested that I take the existing pin out and rough it up to make it fit again. He said that he has never heard of this happening before. Any ideas? The pin that I am talking about holds the shifter lever to the steering column, but allows it to move towards the driver to shift out of park.

I don't really have any pics, but i could take one if you think it will help. I can't glue it because the shifter has to pivot away from the driver to lock into park and has to move towards the driver to shift out of park. The epoxy would be broken the first time you pull the shift lever towards yourself to shift out of park.
