Hi. 2000 Ranger ex-cab. The other day I climbed in and when I leaned back to get comfy, I heard (and felt) something snap in the seat back.
It is now quite loose in the bottom left area slightly above where the hinge mechanism is. It has maybe 1/2 inch play. The right side is fine.
This is my daily driver and can't afford much more than an afternoon of downtime. How much of a can of worms is it to get the seat cover off and back on and get to the seat frame?
Anywhere I can see a schematic of the frame and even a hypothesis of what let go back there? Thanks in advance!
I had this happen in my 94 with the original seats and then a set from an 01 explorer. The upper back is held by an allen bolt forget the size and it breaks. Just get the seat out, pull the cover up and then the foam and you will see the broken bolt. Go to ace or similar hardware store get a grade 8 replacement, does not need to be an allen/socket head to work. Replace the foam and cover reinstall.
Thanks. What is the best way to get the seat out? Is it possible to do in place? So just some allen wrench set is all I need for tools or more? Thanks again!
seat is held in by 4 bolts in floor board and the seatbelt assy on the inside. As noted grade 8 is a hardness rating and yes metric has equivelents just cant remember what it is. I would imagine you could do it in the vehicle, just out of vehicle you are not hindered by not having room to work. As I said take the seat cover loose by either reclining the back or fold forward to gain access to the piece that holds the seat back cover in place. pull the cover up and pull foam away. The bolt is about 1/2 way up the lower frame. Take the bolt or the threaded piece to ace or where ever and get a harder replacement one reinsert and pull foam and cover back and you will be done. Just a PIA to do but does not take long.
The seat is held in by torx bolts so maybe if you dont have tools doing it in truck is the easiest. my truck is a 94 dont know what the later ones have. If you get a hex bolt a crescent (adjustable) wrench will be all you need. I am guessing you have some basic tools like pliers etc.
