the lever that adjusts the back of the seat broke. does anyone know around how much it will cost to replace it? Would i have to replace the entire seat?
There is a recall regarding the bolt that holds the rear part of the seat. I don't know if that's your problem. Call Ford and find out. You could get it for free. They just replaced mine yesterday.
i dont think its a bolt. I meant the lever for the reclining of the chair just broke off, and it wasnt a clean break, so I dont know how much of the seat they can fix? or would i have to replace the whole seat
I replaced mine a while back. The recline lever has to be purchased as an assembly. It is about $65.00 at Ford, took about 20 minutes to replace. You need to remove the power seat control panel and lift the seat cover up from the rear. you will also will need torx bits 50 or 55 cant remember
I wonder if that is a common problem. My 97 Explorer also has a broken recline lever on the driver's side. I didn't realize it until after I bought it and the handle is in the glove box. Glad to know it is a relatively cheap fix and the whole seat doesn't need to be replaced.
I haven't had it fixed yet. I was afraid I was going to have to replace the whole seat. I had a problem with my BMW that I just sold for parts when I got the Explorer, and I needed a driver's seat, and even USED, all I could find was a pair of seats for $800, so I was afraid to even look into it. I managed to get my seat adjusted pretty well without moving the back at all, but I would like to fix it eventually. I couldn't understand how it broke - the handle looks like it was snapped right off. I purchased a third party extended warranty, but I don't think it will cover the seat anyway. I am going to take it into the dealer to get a rattling and my check engine light problem looked at, so I will ask them about the seat while I am there. I will let you know, but I probably won't have a chance to bring it in until next week. Let me know if you get any more info. I will probably do it myself as Dale suggested.
The same thing happened on my '98. I'm hoping the recall will involve the same procedure to replace the lever as the bolts so that they can replace the lever as well. Does anyone know if this is true? If not, Daleg, is this something I could do myself with the right tools?
I thought that I was the only one with a broken front seat but apparently this is a common problem. I have resorted to proping it up with a milk crate until I have time to repair it. I wish Ford would recall this problem!
When I took my 98 Explorer in for the Seat bolt recall they replaced the broken handle and said it was part of the campaign. I didn't ask questions, I just nodded and said, "okay, have at it." The handle is smaller and is all metal with no plastic piece but seems much more robust.
The broken handle is very common. It was just a bad design by Ford. Whenever you exit the vehicle, you basically put your weight (or a portion) on the handle. Over time the metal wears out and breaks.
