I've just bought a 1994 f150 4wd. It does have front and rear sway bars and manual hubs. When I bought it the guy said it had steering issues where it would lock up while driving. He replaced the steering gear box , high pressure line , low pressure line. I've replaced the drag links and tie rod ends. After I replaced them I started the truck and finally felt the problem but not exactly sure where to start looking now. Both the u-joints in the front axle are intact. It almost felt like the steering lock was engaged. It took 4 times moving the wheel side to side and it freed up. Anyone had this problem or would possibly know what is causing this? Thanks
What does this mean? The joints could be dry and binding up. You wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at them. Another possibility would be the ball joints

If the steering lock is engaged the wheel would move back and forth freely through a VERY small angle, and then hit a hard stop. If it was a frozen U-joint (or ball joint or rod end) I'd think it would be a softer stop, like something was binding up rather than something hitting a hard stop.
If it is the steering lock it seems like it shouldn't be too hard to take the column apart and either replace / fix it or just disable it completely. I've never heard of it happening, but that doesn't mean it couldn't.
