Steering problem

Hey there, I have a 1996 F150 5.0 4x4. Periodically when I'm driving, the steering wheel seems to lock up or it seems like It sticks in one spot and I cant turn the when unless I turn it a good amount. When it finally breaks free, it jerks to the direction that I turned to steering wheel. It really freaks me out cause it'll happen randomly and I have to turn the wheel about 2" or so to break it out of this lock, and it suddenly jerks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how much you know about your steering linkage. First thing you need to do is get the front tires up off the ground and get someone to turn the steering wheel from stop to stop so that you can check for any binding or excessively worn parts. Things to check are your steering and pitman arms, your tie rods and tie rod ends, and your ball joints. Also, you may need to look into seeing if it is your steering wheel lock in the steering column that is catching. Either way, that truck of yours sounds like a serious accident accident waiting to happen. Good luck finding the problem and let us know what you find out.
