When making right turns and returning the steering wheel back to center, the steering locks up and sticks. If I wiggle the wheel slightly to the right and back to the left, the lock up goes away allowing me to return to center.
I just replaced upper and lower ball joints because they were shot. Took the truck for a test drive last night and the steering problem still exists.
If your truck is 4wd, try greasing your front u-joints, the only greasable joints in the whole truck(why)?? I had same prob, greased joints and it helped, but I think I let them get to far as it still does it once in a while
Just picked the truck up from dealer diagnostics. They said the steering gear box was bad. Of course not under any warranty. Dealer wants $655 to replace it. $179 from AutoZone and me under the truck again tonight will take care of it. Thanks for the reply.
What else should I be expecting to fail before 80K miles?
it doesn't have a steering damper does it? I wouldn't necessarily expect anything to be failing. Sounds odd for the steering box, but have heard of it.
Have you owned the truck sence it was new? If not someone could have over tighten the steering box adjuster nut, which will cause the gears to ware out prematurely.
