Running light nut inserts stripped

Title says it all. 3 of the nut inserts just spin and had to grind the screw heads to get old lights off. How do I fix this? Can I buy new nuts?

On the roof? Could pull the headliner and have a helper hold the nutsert with vise grips as ya drill them out.... choose a bit that'll make the nutsert body paper thin that they can just be folded and removed.

Nutserts are available through Grainger, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware, Jeg's, Aircraft Spruce, and others. I bought an entire kit from Jeg's.

After you remove them... preferably as HIO suggested you will need to re-install. If the hole in the roof is OS due to spinning, a backer plate made from ~18 gauge sheet metal with just the right hole size will fix it.

Getting the hole size right so the nutsert fits snug may require experimentation with a couple of different drill bits.

Setting the nutsert is done with either a special tool or a long strong screw with jam nut and washer to compress the nutsert. Once set, back off the jam nut, remove screw and install your lights.

Title does not say it all, because not only did you fail to mention the year, but exactly what is a running light?

Some people refer to the parking lamps as running lamps, the genuine Ford roof clearance lamps used #8 -18 x 3/4" long oval head screw and #8 nut.

Clearance lamps did not use a 'blind nut' aka nutsert.

X2 on never seen a nutsert used for a top of the cab (clearance) light install. Remove the headliner and have at it from the under side.

The parking lights/running lamps/turning signal are held in the outer grill shell with a black press in piece that locks in the grill shell and then the screw goes in that.

X3 on I bet he is talking about cab lights.

It doesnt really matter if roof nutserts weren't OEM. Most anything is possible these days given the age of these trucks.

OK, let me clarify, the lights on the roof. Us locals always called them running lights. I do have these inserts that look to press into the roof. I'll remove the headliner and see whats there from the bottom. Numberdummy, it must be an odd feeling to wake up everyday knowing you are perfect. I have read your insulting posts for years. Your just an old goat who gets off on irritating good people.

Uh huh...
No one is forcing you to read my posts, so if you don't like them, don't read them!

Here's a pic of the factory installed clearance lamps, but the lamps on your truck may not be factory.

There is a tool that is used to install nut zerts. If you don't have access to one you could try using a bolt/screw and a nut to try and tighten them down. Put the nut on the bolt, the bolt in the zert and tighten the nut to try and reseat the zert.

If that doesn't work you'll have try and hold the zert while drilling it out. Then install new ones.

This doesn't have anything to do with Ford or their parts.

Ah come on now, are you that chebby truck ownerish, insert (thinskinned) to let that off hand comment get you riled up? It is what it is, the internet. I let his attitude roll off like water off a ducks back. Even though a lot of times my inside voice screams a lot more. I type a ton of curse words...then I back space...to keep my membership and help keep this site up and running and continue learng as much as i can and keep my trucks on the road.
