Clearing Jammed Nut from Socket

In removing 4 dozen rusted fasteners from the bed of my '56, quite a few nuts jammed in the socket, half with the stem of a rusted/busted carriage head bolt, so I couldn't rethread the nut on a bolt end and work it off. Since this is a new socket set, I felt bad about the usual release technique: bouncing the socket off the driveway. Stepped into the garage for a piece of brass rod I've been using as a knockout bar on my lathe. The origin of this bar is bathroom plumbing---it was the lift rod for the drain stopper on a sink and comes with a nice 3/4" mushroom head at one end. Anyway, the brass is friendly to the new sockets, and the 1/4" stem will fit thru the drive opening on all size sockets.

I always just use a punch, and tap them out with a hammer.

> bouncing the socket off the driveway

LOL! Same way I do it, though when they bounce back and hit the car :-(

Though for the mild ones I turn them upside down, stick a small Craftsman screwdriver though and pound it out.

Clearing Jammed Nut from Socket

Thread the nut back on the stud a few threads and pull the socket off. Remove the nut with your fingers, or put the socket back on and remove the nut again.
