As you guys know I am restoring my Truck as close as I can original. I will be getting my engine back soon so have been playing with a few colors. I found this PlastiKote brand in Hot Rod yellow. What do you think? Too bright or not? It does not go on the best and would need multiple light coats. Thanks for your opinions.
That paint looks real nice.
I have a bellhousing like that out in the shop but the mounting holes are different. It came with a 53 F100 I bought some time ago. Is this one for a Y-block or a flathead? I guess that there is a third option of a I6.
Dave, as you may know, I had some recent experience with the Hirsch Company. They advertise their engine enamel as the best money can buy. I believe their paint is rated to 800 degrees. You'll have to check with them regarding color. I know they make specific paint for specific engines. I have a quart of paint for Lincoln V12's from the 1930's and 40's I'm trying to give away.
This is the Duplicolor Daytona Yellow on a working engine. The engine had several thousand miles and the paint was burned from the intake as is normal for the Y block that is worked. IMO, it is about as correct color as you'll find.
I would say the color shown on the clutch housing is more like Caterpillar yellow.
I think Ray is correct. It is a more subdued yellow. Dave, is there any place on your engine that some yellow still can be seen? Use that as a guide.
Yes Abe, my engine has paint on it. it is at the machine shop, but I have pictures. I know the paint I put on bell housing is brighter but just a little curious how much the original had faded. I'm not going to beat a dead horse cause I know Engine color has been discussed a lot on FTE. The problem is after I painted it I kind of like it. Will you guys accuse me of going to the DS is I go with it? I plan to experiment a little more.
Thanks Dave, the one I have must be for a flattie. I'll have to get the casting number off it and find out for sure...someone out there needs one!
Charlie, This is for a '53 with a flathead V-8 and 3-speed.
You probably already know, they are a one-year item in the US. I don't know about the Canadian trucks. I would assume it is the same as the '54 with a 3BA flathead V-8. If so, that would make it a two-year item.
That little rectangular piece is the original color? Then I think you nailed it. Cudos to Joe Harrier for the Duplicolor suggestion. I'll keep that in mind if I ever want to paint the my 55 engine.
