I have read several comments about the correct color for a 52 239 engine. The following pictures show the original color, on the starter cover. The end of the drag link is Dupli color Alpine Green(which is close).. The other color is Bill Hirsch Lincoln Green which has been stated is close. It is not, way darker than the original. Any other suggestions. I painted my motor a year and half ago. It has been covered in my shop. I was getting close to start preparing to set the motor in frame and moved the engine out into my enclosed barn. The condensation built up on it and is started to peel and rust, At this point I am considering applying paint stripper to it and paint again. Any thoughts from any of you who have more experience at this?
I believe Alpine Green is a little off from the original color you are looking for--maybe a little too blue. It is my understanding that the color closest to the original Ford engine color is Bill Hirsch Lincoln-Mercury Light green 1940-54,56. The part number is #5670-5003. I learned all this the hard way! Stu (Truckdog) got me straightened out. You can read about it in my thread entitled, "Yikes! Engine Paint Mismatch". My engine is an I6, but if you want to match the original engine color you are showing, I believe you will be happy with Bill Hirsch part #5670-5003.
good luck.
Jim
PS. Truckdog has some beautiful pictures of his engine posted in some of his threads. Check them out to see what Hirsch Lincoln-Mercury Light Green looks like on an engine.
Thanks Panel,
I went to your old thread and looks like I made the same mistake you did. I ordered Lincoln Green in attached picture. I just went to their website and it doesn't show numbers, just colors.
Like you, I heard everyone talking about Lincoln Green as being such a good match. I didn't realize there was more than one "Lincoln Green" to choose from. Hopefully you can make an exchange. I wasn't able to because my paint was already several years old before I got around to using it. I'm happy with the color match and the quality of the paint. I brushed my paint on. Next time I would spray it.
If someone wants a quart of mis-matched Hirsch Lincoln Green, I'm still offering mine free to a good home--just realize it's about 5 years old at this point.
Prep is key. It won't adhere if there is any silicone, oil, rust..... I just de-greased my engine when I got the truck, covered stuff as best I could and pressure washed it. Used a squirt bottle with some Kleen Strip Prep & Etch and washed it again. Blew it off with compressed air and painted it with Duplicolor Alpine Green. It was temporary until I rebuilt my engine which I hope to do soon. Still holding up after a couple years. I plan on getting the correct color after the rebuild.
Don't get the prep & Etch on anything aluminum or inside anything. Basically a stripped down engine and plugged holes. Don't let your pressure washer blast out your gaskets or seals. This method is for an assembled engine. Obviously I will do things different during my rebuild.
Here is the Hirsch paint on Mark Mossell’s ‘52 Ranger engine. Thanks Jim for the comments on my engine. I just took Chuck’s and Mark’s recommendations and got the right paint. Stu
I just got off the phone with Bill Hirsch, the numbers on the can are batch and production numbers. They do not associate with any particular color. I think where I messed up is ordering Lincoln Green and not Lt. Green. I will order Lt Green and see. What's another $50.00. lol
Stu, can I assume my 52 4 speed should be black? Water pumps are also green? What about the draft tube?
Yes, water pumps green and tranny is black. My 215 draft tube is black which I think is correct. I believe I see that Mark’s is black on his 239. Please ignore my temporary exhaust pipe.
No, Mark’s is unpainted. Don’t know if his stayed that way or was temporary. Stu
