I am a cummins owner who just got a 2002 7.3 last week. It drove great for 200 miles then suddenly died last night going 60 mph. It sat overnight then started up and drove 10 miles then died again. I changed the cps and still no start. I changed the oil and let it sit overnight and it started this morning and idled for 5 minutes then died again. I have tried unplugging the ipc and still same no start situation. I plan to check the hpop level today to verify it is full. I also checked the nut on the ipr and it's electrical connection.
I am just a shade tree at best and would love some direction on where to look. I don't have any scan equipment to check pressures.
Probably not. If it runs normally when it runs, then it's likely not the IPR.
Your symptoms sound exactly like mine when I had the CPS go bad. When you replaced it, did you install a known good Motorcraft, International, or Alliant CPS? Are you sure it's installed properly? Some off brand CPS's can be bad right out of the box.
It may still be the IPR. Coil could be going bad and quitting when it gets hot. Next time it shuts down put ice on it or spray it with a can of air to cool it. See if it restarts right away.
I assume you already checked to see if the tin nut is snug on the back of the IPR?
I chased the same problem on my '02 7.3 for a while finally discovering there was a hyper chip in the slot of the pcm. Once it was removed the engine had no problems. There does seem to be justification for pcm programming help if you are towing heavy. I use a SCT Flash tuner that works good for my limited needs.
I put a cheap cps in it from oreilly's. I just ordered a motorcraft and will install it as soon as it comes in. Not sure how it can be installed wrongly? Looks like an 1/8 gap when installed.
I added 5 gallons of diesel today to check the fuel concerns, still no start.
I checked voltage at the ipc top left pin and it was 5 volts, it remained at 4.96 volts while cranking. Does this sound right?
My icp does have oil in the plug area, ordered new one. It still won't start with it unplugged.
I have been reading and searching. My tach is not moving while extended cranking. I have had a battery charger on it continuously so batteries are cranking it over quickly. Would this indicate the cps?
This is probably a dumb question but how do you determine if there is a hyperchip in the pcm slot? I am new to the 7.3 so need to ask. This truck runs pretty good and was assuming it is stock, but would like to verify no chip just in case it is causing the no start issues
follow the first part of this video to remove pcm. check for anything installed where he shows attaching the chip. You don't have to open the case to see in the slot
On my truck the after market chip device was easily removed from the pcm shown in the previous video without removal of the pcm. Nothing needs to be in the slot in the pcm to restore it to original. If there is nothing in the slot when you look at it your problem is more than likely wiring if it hasn't been resolved by doing the things you mentioned. I found bare wires at the ipr connector. The pcm connector is famous for getting contaminated. The previous video is an excellent for cleaning the connector on the pcm. You can use alcohol and a bristle brush to clean the plug. If there is oil in the ipr it is bad and need to be changed and the connector cleaned.
I don't remember which year the fuse was changed but... The fuel bowl heater is on the same circuit as the PCM. If the heater is faulty it will short circuit and blow the fuse. 30amp fuse. ON my 99 it is in the under dash fuse block. Not sure on the 02 tho. I am sure someone else will chime in.
Would be odd that it blew a fuse when you had other issues going on but....I have seen stranger things happen.
If it is blown, then just unplug the harness from the fuel bowl and then replace the fuse.
I replaced the cps with an oem, then icp and new pigtail. Still no start, finally got the new ipr in off of ebay. It ended up being the coil on the old ipr. Started up and ran rough for about 10 minutes. It has now cleared up and revs nicely.
