CPS or not???

My truck is giving me fits. At the race track sitting idling it died and started right back up. When we left the track we got about 1/2 mile away and it bucked a couple times and quit running. We coasted to the side of the road and tried to restart but it would only "kick" once every time I cranked it but not keep running. After about 1/2 hour and the batteries seeming to slow down the truck started and we pulled the trailer 25 miles home. Next day the truck wouldn't start at first but after cranking and it kicking it did start and I took it to the car wash with no problems. After reading on here about CPS's A friend go me one at his discount from CarQuest (mistake!). We put it in and the truck would not start at all so we put the old one back in and it started rght up no problem. We went back to CarQuest and they had to order another one and it did the same thing, no start. Well back to CarQuest for a rufund, NOT. They said to check some wire under the fuel filter and ordered me another one. This one made the truck run for about 1 hour before it wouldn't start again. I put the old one back in and went home. I now have a 4th CPS from CarQuest and it started on Friday night so we loaded the trailed for Saturday and then on Saturday the truck would not start so I borrowed a truck and went to the races. The truck seems to smoke white when it won't start but always starts with the old CPS. The truck always runs fine when it runs. What is the wire under the fuel filter? I knew better than to get a CarQuest one but we were in a pinch and he got a "discount". Does this sound like CPS problems or somthing else. THANKS in advance, I really need this fixed.

By the way my truck is FOR SALE

You don't say what year truck you have, but if it is earlier than a 2002, then a tell tail sign of a bad CPS is the tach does not move when trying to start it. It does sound like a clasic CPS going south. You can buy them from Ford @ $180, International @ $100, sponser of this site or Ebay for about $60 delivered (in a Ford package). I have heard other horror stories about CarQuest CPS, so that doesn't mean much except that you got stuck with the goods.

Sorry to hear of your problems. Others will jump on here and give you additional advise on how to proceed, but if you have time, I would go to ebay and order one now.

Jim

If this fixes it do you think CarQuest will refund my money after 4 bad CPS? My truck won't run on theirs but will run on my old one. OR does it not sound like CPS problem?

Low pressure oil pump may cause some of the symptoms. Watch and record the time it takes for the pressure registering on the guage. What kind of miles do you have?

202,000 miles. Do you mean when I start it look to see how long till the gauge registers?

I'm hoping that will be my fix also. I'm gonna see about getting my money back if the Ford one fixes it.

Under the powerstroke cover is the HPOP reservoir to the right side is a plug with a hex shaped indention remove it and the oild should be 3/4"-1" from the top.

Unscrew the little allen head plug on top of the reservior. The level should be within a half inch give or take from the top.

Quick draw there Alan.

The truck started right up today so I moved it to the street so I could jockey cars around so I could work on it today. Well guess what? It wouldn't start at first but after about 15 minutes of trying it finally kept running enough to get it back in my driveway. I shut it off and it started right back up but sure smokes white alot more. When it runs right there is no smoke. My tach does not go all of the way back to zero when shut off and it does bounce when it starts, sputters and shuts off. I checked my HPOP oil level and it was about 3/4" from top, my oil pressure gauge goes up immediatly when I start it. Does that mean my "low pressure oil pump" is OK? Right now the truck won't start so I'm waiting for my new CPS to arrive. Does it still sound like CPS problem? Thanks, Marty

The new CPS just came and I put it on. It started right up but is it fixed? I'm going for a test drive now for a short distance.

By the way the truck is still FOR SALE.
