Previous owner blew up the rear diff and put in one that came off a Telephone truck . No telling what size truck but I suppose super duty or F450 . Problem is there are NO shock brackets on this axle or shocks ..
It is really beefy look with at least 12 - 14 springs in the pack pluse two overloads on top. This thing rides hard I feel every little bump .
Can I have someone weld on brackets or what. And how can I tell what is back there , I know it has 410 gears in the rear but thats all
I have a Dana 70 3:73 under my truck, 14 springs and no shocks. I thought it was odd that it didn't have shocks. I also feel every little bump (and I have a bad back). My truck was a fire department rig that had everything taken care of and maintenance was pretty good, so I am thinking maybe its normal, but I can't say for certain. I will tune in to see if anyone has a correct answer.
That was my thought ,The rear is sprug so stiff I guess shocks wouldn't help much. Going down the highway is ok and not bouncy but hit a small bump and you feel it.
Yep! Going down the highway is like riding on a trampoline.
I got tractor AT's too, so its bouncy and incredibly noisy. I am gonna get the tires changed out though - the sidewall is starting to deteriorate.
So, you got an '80 F350 Dually. Is it a pickup or something special?
In theory the tires are the shock absorbers when you have a big load on the back. You can always clamp a big u bolt/plate to the axle and use that as a mounting point for a shock and see if that makes much of a difference before you go welding stuff on.
Floatation tires inflated to about 30-40 psi might make a big difference in ride quality, if you are replacing the tire. 85 series tires tend not to have much sidewall flex.
FWIW: I have seen shocks on the newer cab and chassis F-450 from the factory. On the older trucks, shock choice may have been up to the person ordering the C&C and putting the box or body on. They then left it off to save cost or the air springs were removed.
I have an 85 F-350 chassis cab dually with the Dana 70. The shock brackets just clamp on. Just like an exhuast U-bolt. I would think that these brackets would be somewhat readily available.
