Rear shock mount

The rear shock absorber mounting brackets are busted on my 1964 F100. I am talking about the bottom mount, which had been welded to the underside of the axle. The mounting brackets are in poor shape (thin metal), so I think welding them back is a poor option. Any ideas on how I can secure the rear shocks? Thanks!

Welding is the preferred method of attachment, that is the way Ford did it. Maybe the fellow that did yours hadn't completed his welding course. Have someone with welding experience take a look at it for you.

Thanks John. The welding job was pretty pathetic. I am sure an experienced welder could do a much better job.

Do you know if an aftermarket mount is available? The current ones are pretty screwed up from the past welding effort. I could grind them down a bit and have a real welder attach them for me but a new mount would give him an better surface to work with. I've search arould some parts catalogues but haven't found anything.

Maybe I am making too big a deal out of this. I just got the car a week ago and she seems in pretty good shape except for the shocks being out of commission.

I moved some a while back but don't recall if or where I may have gotten new ones from. Seems like I did, maybe one of the others here can pitch a place to purchase.

When I saw this post yesterday, I figured some dealer might still have some...I was wrong.

Ford never offered these lower shock mounts, they only were furnished with the axle housing.

According to the pics in the parts catalog, the type used on 1961/64 F100's is not the same as 1965/72 F100's used.

1961/64's have a pin (threaded on the end for the nut) that protrudes from the bracket that the shock mounts to.

1965/72's have two welded on straight brackets, the shock mounts between them using a separate bolt and nut.

You may want to look at Summit Racing. They have axle parts, you may be able to get something to work.

It shouldn't be too hard to have them fabricated from .250 plate steel at your local welding shop if you couldn't build them yourself. Even if you found them after market, you will still be welding them on. If you are looking for something bolt on, it will probably be substandard anyway.

Thanks to everyone who answered my question. I am going to have a friend try to weld the old mounts back to the axle. If that fails, we will fabricate new mounts.

I just found this site and I think it will be helpful to read all the old posts. I hope the group is willing to keep educating me if I have more questions.
