As it's already been said, people are stealing tailgates left and right these days, Esp if it has the backup camera in it. Ounce of prevention I guess.
I am loving my new 2017 Xlt.
However I hate the tailgate lock ,and quite frankly can see NO benefit of this feature.
Drivers door is open , but other doors are locked , tailgate is locked . Can't open tailgate while e gone is running . ARGH !!!
Is there anyway to make the tailgate where it is never locked ?
My suggestion to you would be to ditch the ford and be a real man but a Chevy , tailgate locks , weak transmissions , the list goes on and on I own a 2019 f250 with 6,000 miles and it rides rough as a brick , if I was you I wouldn’t worry about the tailgate and I’d take a look at the real problem The whole dam truck
In my cluster settings there is an option to turn "Auto Lock" off. If you set the unlock to be all doors and then disable the auto lock you should be good to go.
(as long as you don't mind the cab doors staying unlocked as well)

Considering this thread is 2.5 years old, I'm going to guess the OP's dealt with their issue already. But to your other question:

Yep, tailgates get stolen. The two primary reasons for it (that I know of) are:
1) OEM replacement tailgates are expensive, so there's a black market for lower costs alternatives. Back when my mother ran the office for a collision centre, she mentioned told me a story about how one of their worker's wife's needed a replacement tailgate after hers was stolen. She called a couple of parts suppliers to find one, and the only one who had one in stock (which coincidentally was also already painted the same colour) told her they had one, until she mentioned where the worker's wife said it was stolen from, at which point the parts place recanted and said they were mistaken and they actually didn't have one in stock. So, yeah, something fishy going on there....
2) Scrap metal recyclers, as they're easy targets for large quantities of metal. Don't really need tools to remove them, so they're targets for grab and go.

I think the lock is there to prevent theft.
With that being said, I’m sure you can disable the lock by disconnecting or actually cutting the wires to the lock.
My truck came without a rear bumper attached - stolen off the truck while on the dealer lot.
I had made arrangements to buy the truck the night before, flew to Denver to pick it up... When they went to prep it for delivery, they realized bumper missing and called me. My flight was in 4 hours so I said put bumper on, or at least parts in the bed. The parts were in the bed, along with the paint matched end pieces. Got home back to NC, the long skinny box wasn't the bumper cover, it was a bed rail. I have an extra bed rail now lol. I needed the truck for a winter trip to CA, way up high in the mountains where we got over 50 feet of snow this year, so waiting wasn't really an option.
