Tailgate door

Thinking I would have figured out this problem after couple months of ownership on a loaded Lariat, but I haven't and have no answer to how to control the tailgate locks. Occassionally I would turn around to the tailgate and attempt to open the door but find it locked. I would need to manual unlock with the key. Sometimes I don't. So this got me all confused. When do the tailgate door locks automatically? With remote lock, locking all four doors will also lock the tailgate door too? I've never had locked tailgate door on my 98 Lariat, only way to do was to manual lock it using the key.

??? The tailgate on the bed?? To my knowledge (unless you have an aftermarket addition) Ford F-150s never came with a power tailgate lock. Just manual lock with the key.

Gravity did it. It's just a lever that controls the lock. When you hit a few bumps, or open and close the gate a few times, the lever will fall. Kind of a pain, but liveable.

7700ROB is right. It is a known issue with this model of pickup. Not really a problem but just a pain. Bumps + gravity will cause it to lock....sometimes. There are aftermarket kits though that you can get and install that will add power lock to your tailgate. Just do a search on the net for "TAILGATE POWER LOCK" and you will get links to a few different sites. They usually run about $80.

Just keep it locked, might keep someone from stealing it.

ahh... allright. Thinking that it might be another newer feature from Ford on high end models. But it isn't, kinda of hassle but overall it's a BAD *** truck! Hey thanks for advice to keep it locked at most times.

Do a search this has been covered before. You can get it to stop locking inadvertently by pulling it out and reinstalling it. But I can't remember the sequence. It all depends on if it was in the lock or unlocked position when installed.
