Question Electronic lock on Tailgate ?

Anyone done this yet ?
Will the 2012 come with it and we can just add it on to a 2011 ?

It sucks to have to shut off the truck to go unlock/open the tailgate and then run back around and start the truck again.... then remember to lock it again later.

I looked at mine and the key is not needed operate the locking mechanism. So it would seem that all a person would need is an actuator to throw the locking bar. Run the wires to the door locks and then it would lock/unlock the tail gate with the doors.
You could even go one further (while running the wires) and put a pressure switch on the tail gate that would also activate the alarm if the tailgate was opened, while the alarm system was armed.

JcWhitney sells one for the trucks "without factory lock" so not sure if this would work.... Pop & Lock POWER TAILGATE LOCK - JCWhitney

I saw some kits on eBay for older model fords but not sure if they would work on the 2011's.

But I agree and cant believe this isn't standard factory installed item.

Issue is being discussed on this thread on a different forum:

Power Tailgate Locks w/reverse cam

Problem is the link they give for Pop&Lock PL8255 is always sold out.

I would like to mod this on my truck to the passenger side wiring so it requires the passenger door to be unlocked for the tailgate unlocking.

Single key/fob click for driver door, double click for passenger doors and tailgate if your truck is set for double click unlock.

I used the rear drivers door for the double unlock on my 08 crew cab

I used the PaceEdward LK370 kit on my truck

My tailgate has the step and handle camera.

the pace edwards shoves a rod in to stop the handle mechanism, while the pop&lock actually moves the lock lever to disengage the handle.

And the product from the link you provided is more reasonably priced. Unfortunate thing is I googled pl8255 pop and lock and found an in-stock part at etrailer.com just after i posted. I've done business with etrailer successfully multiple times so I went ahead and ordered the part before I saw your post.

Thanks for the post though.

According to this topic, https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...l#post10102050
the 2011 door locks are now pulse controlled, meaning you would have to provide a relay and additional power to control the LK370 (and probably the Pop&Lock) locks..

Look around town and find a shop. A car audio shop would be able to do it for you. It's not that much, I found one here in MI that would put it in for me for $60. And that's for the actuator and install. All you have to do is run a wire from the tailgate to the rear door lock wire. Just make sure you put a quick disconnect on so you can still remove the tailgate.

Search this forum, I added a relay pack that I made up to activate tool box locks - and the tailgate lock if I ever get the kit.

I can lock my tailgate without turning off my truck.

Use one of these and keep an extra key on the other ring.

Kinda takes the electronic (and nerdy) part out of the lock

My order with etrailer is back-ordered but just got an update today. Etrailer has contacted the distributer/manufacturer and was told they should be receiving the shipment in two weeks max. Hopefully the stock starts flowing again.

Makes me curious if the delay in stock shipments had anything to do with the Japanese tsunami. Timing seems logical.

Funny you should mention that...I just installed my EZ-Down tonight.

The auto-locking tailgate would have been a nice OEM feature and would seem to make sense considering the cost to replace the tailgate if it gets stolen. The stripper pole/step and camera options will make that price add up.

I installed my ez down the other day also and am waiting on my tailate lock actuator. Once that is done, the truck will finally be daily driver (I.e., wife) friendly.

I installed the Pop and Lock model PL8255 on my 350 today. I have the camera and man step. Here were my observations.
1. Installation instructions are incorrect on 2 items. Actuator location and wire coloring. Actuator goes on the passenger side bolt not driver side.
2. For the 2 click unlock I used the violet/gray strip wire(it is bundled together with a wire that is also violet/gray) and the gray//brown strip wire (this one is bundled with 2 other wires also gray/brown strip). These wires were located in the passenger door sill.
3. To prevent binding in the mechanism I used a 1/16 spacer between the scissor link bracket and actuator bracket.
4. Cleaned and lubed all pivot points in the locking mechanism.

Locks and unlocks as advertised, now let's hope it lasts for a while.

Well, after having the PL8255 on back-order for months, I was notified that PL8250 part can be used. There is a sticker on the PL8250 part indicating this and the seller contacted Pop & Lock to confirm. Actually, the seller was contacting Pop & Lock frequently to find the status of the order and the PL8250 part was mentioned.

PL8250 does work perfectly on a 2011 F350 with OEM reverse camera w/ manual lock, no part modification to make it work. Connects to front passenger violet w/ gray stripe & Gray w/ brown (tan) stripe. Do not look for the wires on passenger back, only passenger front.

I'll reiterate what was said earlier on this thread as I also used two washers on the right bolt. Washers are between existing bracket and the new P&L bracket to spread them apart a little. Then use the supplied nylon lock washer which replaces the right OEM nut.

The part should be in stock at etrailer - Pop & Lock - PAL8250. etrailer has the part listed on their website as PAL8250 but on the package sent was PL8250. They also need to update the years/models for part PL8250 and at least add '11 F350 SD. I'm sure it will work on a like optioned F250 too.

It's nice, should have been this way from the factory.
