How do I remove the leaf springs from hangers?

On a 56 F100. I used the search engine and no luck. I see a bolt or nut going into the shackle. It was getting dark on me outside so I quit for the day. I sprayed PB Blaster on everything so when I get back out there tomorrow, hopefully it's soaked in a little. Wanting to take apart my leafs to check for cracks. Also want to replace the bushings and pins/bolts. I got the rear end removed but never seen eye bolts like these. Not sure how to remove the leaf spring from the hangers. Sorry if it's a stupid question guys. I did look on youtube also with no luck.

Hi

That bolt has a nut on the other side, and it is the lock bolt for the pin through the shackle. undo that. I would lift the frame until the tension weight is off the leaf spring, then take a drift pin and knock that bolt through the hanger. I put a socket or vice grips on the pin that goes through the leaf springs and twist pull it out. The springs will drop out of the hanger

Hope this helps

There will be a small hole in the frame behind the hanger, after you remove the lock bolt, insert a small punch through the hole to push the spring pin out. On my 51 F1 I had to drill a couple of small holes in the crossmember to access the spring pin hole.

Leaves don't crack, they break. All the way through. Looking at either side of the leaves, if you see something that looks like a crack, or much larger, it's broken. A broken leaf immediately places a vehicle Out of Service, per DOT regs.

Today I just finished day two, of three and a half days I spend each month, doing brake checks on fire engines and trucks for the six departments we maintain. Checking for broken springs is part of the inspection, cross your fingers for me that I don't find any. They're the bane of my existence. I wish they were as easy to replace as the ones on our old trucks. If I do I'll post a picture or maybe there will be some in the scrap iron bin and I can do the same.

The only spring in the pile that was easy to shoot is a bit obvious. When I can get a pic of a broken leaf in situ I'll post it. Imagine the two pieces still butted together, they would appear to be cracked but, in reality, are broken completely across. Our #1 cause of breakage are frozen spring pins. Gotta keep them lubed, guys!
