Does anyone know how to remove leaf springs from the "pack". I only want one or two leafs to stabilize the rear end, as I am putting in air bags in the back, and I no longer need all the springs. As near as I can tell, you need to remove the clips, and then possibly........pound out the center pin??????? Maybe drill it out, and pound it out?????
The centerpin is actually a bolt not a pin. Take the u-bolts off and drop the axle out of the way and you will see the nut on the top usually. You have to take bend the clips out and put some c-clamps on the pack to keep it from exploding when you undo the center pin. Then you take the pin out and loosen the c-clamps and the pack will be apart.
After you have the U-bolts off and the axle dropped. The quickest way that I have found to remove the pack clamps is to use a grinder and a cut off wheel and just cut it out of the way, abd then since you aren't going to use then again just take the grinder and remove the rest of the clamp and then grind it smooth on the spring. As far as the centering bolt make sure that you use C-clamps are vise grip welding clamps to how the pack together so it does spring apart and hurt you or someone else. Then just use the grinder again to cut the head off the bolt and then (depending on how rustly everthing is) just drive the bolt out with a punch and hammer. But if that doesn't work you may have to use a prybar and take out each leaf one by one. Hope this helps. Paul
