84 idi stay running problems

Alright guys having some running issues. 84. New lift pump and IP. New rear tank.oring kit. Filter.. I got the thing started took down the road. First three gear plenty of power hit fourth and it was like I didn't even have my foot on the pedal. Stop turned around. Same thing. Died coming in the driveway. Wouldn't start till I put foot on the pedal.. then started idles fine then dies when when you hold the pedal down a little ways. The rpms will pulse when you hold the pedal down a little ways after a while. And one injector bubbles a little bit... but not enough to kill it like this.. so any ideas..

Did you time the pump properly with a transducer on injection line #1? If it is a hair off it won't run right.

You need a special meter. Or you can buy this and use a regular timing light.

https://www.toolsource.com/timing-li...5-p-73805.html

Here's the instructions for the above.

http://www.gxtauto.com/uploads/E765-01G.pdf

You can check around and see if there is a shop around you that has the equipment to time it.

I'd take franklin2's advice, it could very well be the timing, fuel injection systems have to be alot more precise in thier operation than a carburetor if something is off by literally a hair, it can (depending on what) make or break the engine.

Yes its a diesel engine, however it doesnt make what i said any less true. If something is off slightly it can make or break the engine.

Original thread starter;

You should get it timed, but that doesn't mean you can't play with it a little bit. You can move the pump from the mark the width of a dime, lock it down and see what happens.

There is a rough way to do it. You should have two wires going to the pump. One is power to make it run, the other is the cold start advance. If you hot wire the advance to a switch and power it at will, when you activate it you should hear the "powerstroke rattle". Switch it off and it should go away. If you have the powerstroke rattle all the time it's too advanced. If you never get the powerstroke rattle it's too retarded.

You should get it timed right though.
