posting for a buddy, he has an 86 460 ford he's gunna rebuild it stock forum.. he's was wondering why some rebuild kits say 04-85-87 and others saying 72-3-85 what's the difference?? Thought 460s were the same from 79-87 for external balance. Thanks in advance
Probably different kits between the carbed and injected motors. The later ones had a little more compression and straight up timing gears plus different heads and intake .. The blocks are the same I think for all intents and purposes
1988 model year was the first for fuel injection.
No roller cams in factory 460's.
The EFI heads had different port locations on both the intake and exhaust side.
'87 460 intakes were the same as any other square bore 4V carbed (non- CJ/SCJ) intake.
EFI trucks had a 'straight up' double roller timing set.
Earlier carbed versions had a 4° retarded timing set with a nylon cam gear that would get shredded and end up blocking the sump strainer.
"straight up" refers to the keyway orientation when the non-retarded crankshaft gear is installed.
Yes, you can swap an EFI timing set into a carbed engine.
