backfiring
I've noticed over the past week if I'm going downhill or at a higher rate of speed (50-65mph) and let off the throttle it'll backfire..and sometimes fairly regularly if I repeat that process. Is this the wrong fuel/air mixture..leak/hole in exhaust somewhere..carbon build up on spark plugs?

Not very likely.
Yes it would be expensive, but as previously stated not likely to be the root cause. Start with the easy things first.
