can the crossover tube on the back of the heads leak exhaust. ive replaced the gaskets on the collectors and on the heads but i cant stop the stupid leak
Yes, these are famous for rusting out, especially if the smog pump has been disconnected. I made a solid gasket for the back of the heads, and used it to block it off.
I thought I heard somebody say they used regular drive in plugs like freeze plugs. But I would think these would be hard to get in with the engine installed. That's why I just made a block off gasket.
I think I've still got a set in the original plastic bag with the P/N still on them. It will be tonight (Tuesday) before I can dig them out and I'll post the number.
Why not use a steel allen head pipe plug? I did that on my 351W heads. Works really well. Plus you have a bonus of not having to cry shout and curse dealing with getting the socket on the back of the head.
I tried to find plugs that worked, but, if they are the same air pipe holes that I have in the 351W heads, they are not pipethread. The size and thread are unique as far as I can tell.
The plugs are called inserts and come in a package of 2. The numbers on the package are F4ZZ-6E086-A and H751B 021398. It is a course threaded plug about 3/4" long and the inside is threaded so that you can use the plug for a bolting something to the head. The front of the head probably already has these plugs in place.
